Trails Less Traveled Hike – Lost Cove
This difficult 6.7 out and back hike with an elevation gain of 2,093 feet will take us to explore the ghost town of Lost Cove in the Poplar Gorge above the Nolichucky River in Yancey County near the NC/Tennessee Border. This hike is not for the faint of heart as it involves a descent down to the remnants of the community with a tough climb back up to the starting point. Established around the time of the Civil War, Lost Cove began to thrive when the logging industry made it a viable stop on the railroad. With the steady supply of customers from the railroad and surrounding towns, Moonshine became an important part of Lost Cove’s economy. Once the logging had been completed in the area, the town slowly disintegrated due to its isolation until it was abandoned in 1957.
